Ivanna Eudora Kean High School JROTC Team
To Compete In
National Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, DC
St. Thomas, Virgin Islands – 6 May 2013 -- After advancing through two phases of competition, the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School’s (IEKHS) JROTC Academic Team composed of Cadet Captain Jamaal Al-Ameen, Cadet Lieutenant Heather Henderson, Cadet Corporals Mary Yvonnie Buendia and Deyjah Foster will represent the larger IEKHS Academic Team to compete in the final Championship round of The 2013 Army JROTC Academic Bowl Championship in Washington D.C., on the campus of George Mason University, June 21-25, 2013. This event is sponsored by the Army JROTC and conducted by College Options Foundation.
During two rounds of competitive online play, the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,582 teams that competed from around the world to win a place in the National Academic Bowl competition and the all-expense paid trip to DC. In these two fast-paced rounds students were tested on their knowledge using SAT/ACT-type questions in the areas of JROTC curriculum, English, Math and Science. One of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. The team is one of only twenty-four Army Academic Bowl teams in the nation to advance to the finals.
The winner of the Army JROTC Academic Championship will compete against the winners of the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy JROTC Academic Bowls in the JROTC Joint Service Academic Bowl Championship.
The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl is a nationally recognized academic competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, academic competition, and college opportunity. The competition creates tremendous opportunities for JROTC cadets by allowing them to demonstrate leadership and academic abilities.
There are 1,731 Army JROTC Programs around the world. It is mandatory for All to participate in Level 1, the First Phase of the competition. According to the College Options Foundation, this is the first time a JROTC Team from the U.S. Virgin Islands has advanced to the National Championships in Washington, DC and they are anticipating a great welcome. The team will continue to prepare for the National Competition by studying and going through practice drills on a daily basis especially after school closes. They will join their counterparts in Washington on the 20th of June. Parents, Teachers, School Administrators, JROTC Instructors and other Academic and Leadership Team mates at Ivanna Eudora Kean share in the pride and chivalry of the first time representation of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the National Competition.
College Options Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the academic development of high school students and assisting them in their preparation for higher education. Using academic competitions, college exam study guides, college admissions tutorials and personalized counseling, College Options Foundation has assisted the nation’s 1.1 million JROTC cadets worldwide.
